Messalonskee High School graduate Ben Koons has been cleared for competition in Saturday’s 30-kilometer pursuit at the Vancouver Olympics, according to a report on the New Zealand Winter Olympics team’s Web site.

Koons was stood down before Monday’s 15K pursuit due to high levels of hemoglobin found in a blood test before the competition. Koons was tested again Friday and his hemoglobin level was below the limit allowed by the International Ski Federation (FIS).

Koons’ high hemoglobin levels are likely a result of high-altitude training just before arriving in Vancouver, according to Andy Shepard, president of the Maine Winter Sports Center in Fort Kent.
