PROSPECT HARBOR — Maine Gov. John Baldacci and state labor and economic officials are paying a visit to the Bumble Bee Foods cannery, which is slated to close in April.

The governor is meeting today with plant managers and workers at the cannery before meeting with Prospect Harbor officials.

Bumble Bee announced last week it is closing the century-old plant, putting 130 people out of work.

The company said it is closing the cannery – the last sardine cannery in the United States — because of sharp reductions in the catch limits of herring, which are tightly packed in small cans and sold as sardines.

Bumble Bee will continue canning sardines at its plant in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick.
