RUMFORD — Funeral services are planned Saturday for Norman Ferguson Jr. a former four-term state senator from Hanover who was also active in Oxford County and local politics. He was 76.

Born in Boston, Ferguson grew up in Bethel and attended Gould Academy, where he won several skiing and track state championships. In the Army in the 1950s, Ferguson was stationed in Austria where he trained troops in skiing. Skiing in the slalom, giant slalom and downhill, Ferguson represented the Army in Alpine ski competitions against European skiers.

Ferguson later worked as an accountant for Oxford Paper Co. in Rumford and served as an Oxford County commissioner. Ferguson’s funeral will be at the Rumford Point Congregational Church.
