AMHERST, Mass. – Lem Atanga McCormick scored 20 points Saturday to lead Amherst to a 76-49 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament.

Amherst (29-0) made eight of its first 11 shots from the field to jump out to a 20-3 lead. The Jeffs extended the advantage to 42-19 at halftime and led by at least 19 points the rest of the way.

Curran Leighton led the Huskies (21-9) with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Haley Johnson added 10 points.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

AMHERST 3, BOWDOIN 2: Geneva Lloyd scored 11:14 into overtime to lift the top-seeded Jeffs (20-2-4, 13-1-3 NESCAC) over the fifth-seeded Polar Bears (12-12-2, 9-8-1) in a NESCAC semifinal at Amherst, Mass.

Despite being outshot 35-12 over the first two periods, the Polar Bears led 1-0 on a first-period goal by Michaela Calnan. Bowdoin went up 2-0 just over a minute into the third as Kayte Holtz broke through for a short-handed goal.

MEN’S LACROSSE

WHEATON 12, UNE 10: Billy McNamara had five goals and two assists to help the Lyons (1-0) down the Nor’easters (1-1) at Biddeford.

McNamara scored three times in the third quarter as Wheaton scored four unanswered goals to take an 11-6 lead.

Tyler Thomas had two goals and an assist for UNE, and Dylan Thomas added four assists.

 

BATES 12, LASELL 5: The Bobcats (2-0) scored five consecutive goals in the final 13 minutes of the third quarter to open a 9-4 lead over the Lasers (0-2) at Newton, Mass.

ST. JOSEPH’S 17, BARD 0: Dylan Chase had four goals and an assist and Paul Dolewa added three goals and an assist to lead the Monks past the Raptors in a season opener at New York.

BASEBALL

MAINE 6, RHODE ISLAND 5: Joey Martin doubled home Taylor Lewis in the 11th inning to lift the Black Bears (3-6) over the Rams (0-7) at Winter Haven, Fla.

Maine rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the eighth on RBI singles by Tyler Patzalek and Lewis.

USM 7, OLD WESTBURY 3: Collin Henry had a two-run double in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie as the Huskies (1-0) opened their season by beating Old Westbury (1-4) at Yaphank, N.Y.

Mike Eaton homered for USM.

SOFTBALL

MAINE SPLITS AT STETSON INVITATIONAL: Terren Hall homered twice and had four RBI in Maine’s 8-4 win over Bethune-Cookman (7-12), but the Black Bears (7-13) were held hitless in an 8-0, five-inning loss to Stetson (10-6) at DeLand, Fla.

WRESTLING

USM HONORS: Mike Morin and Matt Ulrich of the University of Southern Maine earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Morin finished fifth in the 165-pound division and Ulrich was sixth at 141 pounds.
