KEENE, N.H. – Bowdoin Coach Tom McCabe became the 17th men’s lacrosse coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 200 wins as the Polar Bears defeated Keene State 17-10 Tuesday.

McCabe joined Mort LaPointe, who had 218 wins with the Polar Bears from 1970 through 1990, making Bowdoin the only Division III school with two coaches who reached the milestone.

Russell Halliday and Billy Bergner each had three goals for the Polar Bears (2-3), who scored six straight after trailing 1-0 early against the Owls (2-4).

 

UNION 7, COLBY 6: Scott Garibaldi scored with 1:40 left to tie the game, then made the winning goal with 13 seconds to play as Union (5-1) rallied from a 6-1 halftime deficit to beat the Mules (2-3) at Stony Brook, N.Y.

Garibaldi finished with four goals and one assist. Whit McCarthy and John Jennings each scored twice for Colby.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 16, WHEATON 7: Katie Herter had five goals and an assist as the Polar Bears (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Wheaton (1-3) at Brunswick.

Katie Stewart and Celeste Swain added three goals apiece for Bowdoin.

 

UNE 16, COLBY-SAWYER 3: Danielle Cate had five goals and two assists as the Nor’easters (3-1, 2-0 Commonwealth Coast) defeated Colby-Sawyer (2-4, 1-1) at Manchester, N.H.

Kim Bilodeau and Cara Cole added three goals apiece.

BASEBALL

COLBY, KALAMAZOO SPLIT: Abhi Chandel struck out five and walked one in five innings as the White Mules (3-2) took an 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo (3-3) in the first game at Winter Haven, Fla.

Kalamazoo came back for a 4-1 victory in the second game.

Brandon Nieuw had three hits for Colby in the opener, including an RBI single. Mike Mastrocola added a pair of hits and Ryan Conlon drove in two runs with a single.

 

BOWDOIN, ALLEGHENY SPLIT: Brendan Garner had three hits and drove in three runs as Bowdoin (9-2) extended its winning streak to seven games with a 10-9 victory in the first game of a doubleheader in Auburndale, Fla.

The streak ended when Allegheny won Game 2, 11-9.

SOFTBALL

BOWDOIN SPLITS: Claire Ronan had two hits and Lauren Coven hit a two-run triple as Bowdoin (9-5) beat Plymouth State 6-2 at Clermont, Fla.

Bowdoin lost its first game of the day 3-1 against Union, with Gen Barlow getting two of Bowdoin’s three hits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NIT: Murphy Holloway converted a three-point play with three seconds left in the second overtime to give Mississippi (24-10) a 90-87 win over Texas Tech (19-16) in the quarterfinals at Oxford, Miss.

n Deon Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead visiting North Carolina (19-16) to a quarterfinal victory over Alabama-Birmingham (25-9).

NOTES

UNH: Women’s basketball coach Kristin Cole resigned after three seasons, school officials said. Athletic Director Marty Scarano wouldn’t comment on the reasons for Cole’s resignation, but said her departure was “mutually agreed upon.” Cole was 24-67 at UNH.

 

WEST VIRGINIA: Darryl “Truck” Bryant, a point guard on the men’s basketball team, broke his right foot in practice and will miss the rest of the NCAA tournament.

 

MICHIGAN STATE: Football coach Mark Dantonio said Mark Dell, B.J. Cunningham, Chris Rucker and J’Michael Deane have been reinstated for the start of spring drills. They were suspended after a Nov. 22 campus fight at a fraternity.
