Mancuso’s victory at U.S. championships breaks record for most titles by American

Olympic medalist Julia Mancuso won the giant slalom in the U.S. Alpine skiing championships Tuesday at Wilmington, N.Y., her fourth title in the discipline.

Mancuso beat Laurenne Ross, finishing in 2 minutes, 7.52 seconds for her 11th national title. That moved her ahead of Andrea Mead Lawrence for the most titles of any American, breaking a record that stood for 55 years.

U.S. downhill champion Leanne Smith, of Conway, N.H., placed fourth.

HOCKEY

QMJHL: Gabriel Dumont’s goal with 12 seconds left in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and Drummondville added three goals in the final period for a 5-1 win over the Maineiacs at Lewiston, giving the Voltigeurs a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series.

Zachary Evan-Renaud scored for the Maineiacs 16 minutes into the second period.

FIGURE SKATING

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Olympic silver medalists Pang Qing and Tong Jian skated a near-flawless short program to take the lead in the pairs competition at Turin, Italy.

Pang and Tong earned a season-best 75.28 points, two points ahead of Russia’s Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov. Two-time defending world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany were third.

U.S. champions Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett were in sixth place.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: NASCAR is still on target to move to fuel injection engines in 2011.

Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition, said teams have been given parameters to use when testing fuel injection and he expects NASCAR to receive more data in the next month.

Fuel injection is being explored in an effort to make stock cars more fuel efficient. The current cars have used carburetors since the 1980s, and the carburetor has little application to what is currently sold in car dealerships.

n Justin Allgaier participated in his first official Sprint Cup Series test and hoped the session will lead to an upcoming race at NASCAR’s top level.

Penske Racing brought four cars to the two-day test at Charlotte Motor Speedway to give Allgaier seat time. The 23-year-old is coming off his first NASCAR victory, a win in the Nationwide Series last weekend at Bristol.

SOCCER

MLS: Major League Soccer’s minimum salary for senior players will rise to $40,000 this season, and the developmental minimum will go up to $31,250 under the five-year labor contract agreed to last weekend.

Last year, 40 players among 323 listed by the MLS Players Union at the start of the season made the $34,000 minimum and 12 more made the developmental minimum of $20,100. The senior salary will increase 5 percent annually.

As part of the deal, each team’s salary budget will rise from $2.3 million last year to $2.55 million this season, the league announced.

GOLF

PGA: Vijay Singh has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill because of a back injury, the second straight week he has had to pull out of a tournament.
