Three local arts organizations – Space, Portland Ovations and the Portland Symphony Orchestra – have teamed up to present Mandolin Madness, a weekend filled with opportunities to hear performances featuring the mandolin.

Mandolin player Chris Thile will take part in two of the performances. He and his band, the Punch Brothers, kick off the weekend on Friday with a concert at Merrill Auditorium. On Saturday, a number of mandolin players perform at Space. On Sunday, Thile appears again at Merrill, this time with the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He will perform a composition he wrote that was co-commissioned by the orchestra.

For tickets to the Merrill Auditorium shows, call PortTix at 842-0800 or go to www.porttix.com. Tickets for the show at Space are available at Bull Moose stores and at www.space538.org.
