Grace Fitzpatrick scored two goals Wednesday as the Biddeford Lady Breakers won their opening game in the U-19 Tier II girls’ hockey national championships, beating the Perinton (N.Y.) Edge 4-2 at East Lansing, Mich.

The Breakers scored twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Sophia Goulet of St. Dominic scored unassisted at 9:53 of the third period to put the Breakers ahead. Saundrine Lanouette (37 saves) then made a save on a breakaway.

Fitzpatrick, of Cheverus, added an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left to seal it.

The Breakers will play the Massachusetts Spitfire at 8:20 a.m. today.

Fitzpatrick scored a short-handed goal at 15:41 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Perinton tied it before Jackie Aaskov scored for the Breakers from Sara Grover and Abby Rutt for a 2-1 lead. Aaskov is from Falmouth.

Perinton’s Chloe Hovey tied it with 9:22 left in the first.

In Rochester, N.Y., Dan Hanley of Falmouth had a goal and three assists to lead Casco Bay to a 4-3 victory against the Phoenix Firebirds of Arizona in the opening game of USA Hockey’s Tier II national hockey tournament for boys 18-and-under.

Sam St. Germaine of Cape Elizabeth, Alex Kurtz of Yarmouth and Justin Murphy of Cumberland also scored for Casco Bay.

Casco Bay is scheduled to play the Great Falls Americans of Montana at 6:15 p.m. today in the round-robin competition.

In Reston, Va., the Southpointe Rink Rats of Canonsburg, Pa., posted a 5-2 victory against Casco Bay in USA Hockey’s Tier II national hockey tournament for boys 12-and-under.

Mitchell Donovan of Cumberland scored a goal and had an assist for Casco Bay, and Bobby Murray of Yarmouth scored a goal.

The Maine team is scheduled to play the Fort Wayne Kornets of Indiana at 1 p.m. today in the round-robin competition.
