AUGUSTA — The head of the Department of Veterans Affairs is paying a visit to Maine.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki is touring the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta today along with Congressman Michael Michaud. Rep. Chellie Pingree also plans to be there.

Michaud says he wants Shinseki to hear from people providing services. He also wants to discuss the need to expand health care for rural veterans.

Michaud, a Democrat, is the chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health. He’s promoting several efforts to expand health care to rural veterans, including several community-based clinics as well as mobile outpatient clinics in Maine.
