RANDOLPH — Police apprehended a Randolph man shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday following an eight-hour standoff.

Samuel Smith, 19, had barricaded himself inside an apartment on Water Street (Route 9). Deputies from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office were called around 1 a.m.; they were later assisted by the Maine State Police’s tactical unit.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic assault, according to Capt. Dan Davies. Davies said Smith allegedly assaulted his 82-year-old grandmother, who lives in the same, four-unit apartment building as Smith, at 130 Water Street.

Police evacuated the apartment building.

The suspect sat on the roof of the building and listened to loud music for a while before eventually surrendering to authorities. He was arrested without incident.

Route 9 remained closed during the incident but reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
