The city of Portland has sold the City of Portland, for $25,000.

The city put its old fireboat, the City of Portland III, up for sale after the new fireboat returned to service at the end of February.

The city received three offers, said city spokeswoman Nicole Clegg. The highest bid was $25,000 from a man in Owl’s Head.

The new owner plans to renovate the storied craft, which was bought in 1959 for $259,000, for personal use.

The boat is 65 feet long and its steel hull is in need of repair, but it did have a last fling when it was pressed into service for four months after the new fireboat was damaged hitting a ledge.

The city had thought it might have to sell the boat for scrap.
