AUGUSTA – Reflecting on this week’s Earth Day observances, Gov. John Baldacci says Maine has a long-held commitment to the environment.

In his weekly radio address, the governor says the first Earth Day 40 years ago started the national environmental movement. A Mainer, Sen. Edmund Muskie, was at the forefront as he sponsored landmark clean air and clean water legislation.

Baldacci says that commitment continues with efforts to conserve energy and cut the state’s dependence on foreign oil. He points to the Efficiency Maine Trust, which organizes all of the state’s energy efficiency programs into one place, and the goal of weatherizing every Maine home and half of all businesses during the next 20 years.

In the Republican response, Sen. Debra Plowman of Hampden says her party stood tall against majority Democrats during this year’s session, offering common sense alternatives and solutions to the state’s problems.
