Phoenix tie Pioneers 0-0 for second straight draw

Led by the strong play of defender Colin Henry, the Portland Phoenix played the Western Mass Pioneers to a 0-0 draw in a Premier Development League match Sunday at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

Portland (1-0-2) pressed the Pioneers (0-1-1) early, forcing Western Mass keeper Paul Armstrong to make eight of his 10 saves before halftime. Phoenix keeper Colin Cunnings was tested in the second half, when he made four of his five saves.

Portland outshot Western Mass 13-8, and each team recorded six corner kicks.

It was the second straight draw for Portland, which tied the Albany Highlanders 2-2 in Albany, N.Y., on Friday night.

The Phoenix travel to Manchester, N.H., for their next game Saturday against the New Hampshire Phantoms.

• Phoenix striker Chris Banks, a former UNH player, was named to the PDL Team of the Week for his two goals in a 3-0 win over Westchester on May 9.
