A solid corps of veterans is keeping Scarborough’s girls’ lacrosse team in contention for the Class A state championship.

With five games left in the regular season, the Red Storm are 7-0, one of the two unbeaten teams left in Class A.

“We have seniors on this team who have been with me three or four seasons, and they know this is their last chance to do something,” Scarborough Coach Marcia Wood said.

The last time the Red Storm did something was back in 2006, when they nipped Brunswick 13-12 in the state final to cap Wood’s first season as coach.

This spring, it looks like veteran players at both ends of the field could help Scarborough make another title run.

Four-year veterans Ellie Morin and Lindsay Hagerman lead an offense that has averaged 19 goals per game.

Third-year varsity veterans Jackie Morin, Ellie’s twin sister, and Brittany Ross anchor a defense that has allowed 6.9 goals per game.

Wood said her players knew they had something special going earlier this month when they downed perennial Class B power Yarmouth, 13-9.

“It was the first time we beat them,” she said.

To keep it going, the Red Storm will have to weather the toughest part of their schedule.

Starting Thursday, Scarborough plays three games in three days. It will host Westbrook on Thursday, visit Thornton Academy on Friday and will host unbeaten Gorham on Saturday.

“It will be the first time we’ve gone back-to-back-to-back this season,” Wood said.

Next week, Scarborough will end the regular season with games against Marshwood and powerful Kennebunk.
