LOS ANGELES — Jose Lima, an All-Star right-hander who spent 13 years in the major leagues, died Sunday at age 37.

Lima died of an apparent heart attack in Los Angeles, according to the Aguilas Cibaenas, a winter ball team that Lima had played for in the Dominican Republic.

Lima posted his best season with the Houston Astros in 1999 when he was selected to the All-Star game. He went 21-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 35 starts for the NL Central champions.

Lima revived his career several times, bouncing between the independent league and the minors. He was 89-102 with a 5.26 ERA in 348 games in the majors, with his last appearance a four-game stint with the New York Mets in 2006.

TIGERS: Center fielder Austin Jackson did not play against the Los Angeles Dodgers after getting beaned Saturday night by Ramon Troncoso.

Jackson was taken to the hospital after Saturday’s 6-3 loss wearing a bandage over the bruise above his left eye. He went through a battery of tests, all of which came out negative, and was able to spend the night at the team’s hotel instead of staying over for observation.

NATIONALS: Washington called up outfielder Justin Maxwell from Triple-A Syracuse to take the roster spot of left-hander Scott Olsen.
Olsen went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with left shoulder inflammation.

TWINS: Center fielder Denard Span left the game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth inning with a bruised right shoulder after being hit by a pitch.
A team spokesman said Span is day to day.

REDS: Right-hander Homer Bailey will be evaluated for tightness in his right shoulder that forced him to leave a start against the Cleveland Indians.

CUBS:
Struggling third baseman Aramis Ramirez is getting some extra time to recover from recurring soreness in his left thumb.
Ramirez was out of the lineup for the third time in four days, and the Cubs have a day off today.
Manager Lou Piniella indicated that Ramirez could sit out longer because of what trainers have said is a bone bruise.

DIAMONDBACKS:
Second baseman Tony Abreu left Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays because of a sprained left wrist.
Abreu was injured tagging out Jose Molina at second base in the fifth inning as Molina attempted to stretch a hit into a double.
