KENNEBUNK — Scarborough survived a late-game rally by Kennebunk on Thursday night to finish the regular season as the state’s lone unbeaten girls’ lacrosse team.

Ellie Morin and Kelsey Howard each scored three goals with an assist to lead the Red Storm to a 12-9 victory against the Rams in an SMAA game.

“We wanted this game more than anything,” Morin said.

It seems Scarborough had an old score to settle.

“We lost to Kennebunk last year in the tournament and everyone hates to lose in the playoffs,” Morin said.

“You want to go far in the playoffs and the team that beats you, you want to get back the next (season).”

During this school year, Scarborough teams have gone unbeaten while winning Class A field hockey and girls’ basketball state championships.

Morin and Brittany Ross, who assisted on three goals Thursday night, both played on those championship teams.

“I want to keep the streak going,” said Morin, who intends to play lacrosse at Southern New Hampshire University next season. “I want another state championship so bad, and I think we can do it.”

The Red Storm (12-0) broke open a close game by scoring four goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to open a 7-3 lead.

“At the beginning we started out slowly, which is what we do in all our games,” Morin said. “Once we get our momentum going, it just kind of flows.”

Scarborough clinched it by scoring its last five goals in a seven-minute span in the second half to move into a 12-5 lead with less than nine minutes remaining.

“Kennebunk did a fantastic job of flooding our midfield transition, but we were still able to move and run past them,” Scaroborough Coach Marcia Wood said.

The Rams (8-4) scored four goals during the final six minutes.

The Red Storm held a 21-17 edge in shots on goal.

For Scarborough, Laura Przybylowicz scored two goals and had an assist. Meghan Quirk added two goals. Dani Ross and Lindsay Hagerman each scored a goal.

Emily Kessell led Kennebunk with three goals and an assist. Brooke Worcester and Taylor Crowley scored two goals. Kate Graydon and Allison Bush each scored a goal, and Camille Auger had three assists.

Marina Sterrer made eight saves for Scarborough. Kellie Renk of Kennebunk had nine saves.

The teams are expected to play each other again June 12 in a Western Class A semifinal game.
