HAMPTON BEACH, N.H. — In New Hampshire, which has just 18 miles of seacoast, Hampton Beach has generations of fans who want to see it preserved.

The beach is undergoing a $14.5 million facelift, getting new bathhouses, a boardwalk and Seashell Stage complex for its nightly summertime concerts.

Business and community leaders don’t want to lose the momentum. The storm-challenged enclave has a number of weather-worn beachwear shops, fried dough stands and motels with faded signs and peeling siding.

There are some vacant lots, including a block near some of the construction where several landmark businesses were destroyed by fire in February. The owners plan to rebuild.

A commission also wants to find new businesses willing to invest in the area for the long term.
