BAXTER STATE PARK — The Ohio man who spent three days lost and injured in the wilderness of Maine’s Baxter State Park has been transferred to another hospital.

A co-worker says 41-year-old Michael Hays, of Stow, Ohio, shattered his knee cap during a fall. Rick Hohman says Hays was dehydrated and covered with bug bites when he was found Sunday. He says Hays was transferred to a Bangor hospital, where he remained this morning.

Hays was rescued Monday.

Park Director Jensen Bissell says the biggest lesson for hikers following the ordeal is simple: Stay on the trails. The second lesson is that cell phones won’t always help. Bissell says Hays’ cell phone didn’t work in the remote area where he was hiking.
