JACKMAN — Police say vandals ripped a 7-foot-tall statue of Jesus from its base and dragged it into the middle of Main Street in the remote western Maine town of Jackman.
Police say the gold-leaf, bronze statue weighing 600 to 800 pounds was found lying in the road Sunday night.
Maine State Police Lt. Donald Pomelow told the Morning Sentinel that a chain – which had apparently been used to pull down the statue – was still attached and that there were skid marks in the road.
The statue stood on the grounds of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The church was demolished in November, but the statue remained on the site.
Parishioner Nathalie Haggan said the statue is probably beyond repair, with both of its arms broken, numerous cracks and its nose ripped off.
