BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Naval Air Station says personnel will be digging by hand as they make one final sweep for unexploded ordnance before the base closes.
Spokesman John Ripley said an initial scan earlier this year showed some “areas of interest” at the southwest edge of the airfield and a former explosive ordnance disposal training area.
He says beginning Tuesday workers will use electronic and magnetic detectors to look for small arms ammunition and grenades, but nothing larger than that. He says anything that’s found will be detonated in place.
The work will continue through August as preparations continue for the transfer of the base to civilian authority. The base is due to close next May.
