MONTPELIER, Vt. — The National Weather Service says that a giant thunderstorm that crossed upstate New York and northern New England spawned tornadoes that touched down in Vermont and Maine.
Andy Nash of the Weather Service’s Burlington office says the EF1 tornado touched down in Craftsbury late Saturday afternoon.
He says winds reached an estimated 80 to 90 mph. It snapped trees and did some roof damage.
Nash says the Vermont tornado was about 250 feet wide and was on the ground for about two-and-a-half miles.
The same super-cell thunderstorm then crossed New Hampshire and into western Maine where a tornado touched down in South Paris.
Meteorologists in Maine are still trying to determine how long the tornado was on the ground.
