AUGUSTA — The Maine governor’s mansion is getting an electrical overhaul.
The 180-year-old Blaine House in Augusta is going to be rewired this summer. Wright-Ryan Construction, of Portland, plans to replace obsolete knob-and-tube wiring with modern wiring to improve safety and energy efficiency.
The project presents special challenges because of the historic nature of the building. Wright-Ryan, which specializes in such projects, says it will restore and preserve key historic details of the home affected by the renovation, such as original wallpaper, woodwork and plaster work.
The project is expected to cost $150,000 and take eight weeks to complete.
Built by a sea captain in 1830, the home once owned by James G. Blaine was donated by the state to become the governor’s mansion.
