A teenager from Durham drowned Monday while swimming with two friends in Sewell Pond in Arrowsic.

Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, identified the victim as 19-year-old Jonathan M. Owens.

Turcotte said Owens and his friends, Ryan Dipierro, 21, of Westport, and Sean Quinn, 22, of Alna, were trying to swim 200 yards to a dock when they decided to turn around and head back to shore.

As Owens began to struggle, his friends tried to help. The Maine Warden Service was notified at 3:40 p.m. that Owens was missing.

State police divers recovered his body around 6:49 p.m. in 10-foot-deep water about 30 feet from shore. The incident remains under investigation.
