Vancouver’s Sedin ends Ovechkin’s run as MVP by winning NHL’s Hart Trophy

Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks, who had a league-best 83 assists, won the Hart Trophy Wednesday night during the NHL’s awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

Alex Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington Capitals, was MVP runner-up after winning the award each of the last two years. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby finished third.

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers won the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard, who played at the University of Maine, was a finalist.

Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks won the Norris Trophy as hockey’s top defenseman, and Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk won the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward for the third straight year.

Tampa Bay forward Martin St. Louis won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most well-behaved player after recording only 12 penalty minutes all season.

Chicago and Atlanta are awaiting NHL approval on a multiplayer trade that would send Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel and Ben Eager from Chicago to Atlanta, a person familiar with the negotiations said.
Chicago also would send a prospect to Atlanta and acquire first- and second-round draft picks as well as forward Marty Reasoner and prospect Jeremy Morin.

OLYMPICS

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS: Members of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2000 Olympics will receive their bronze medals at a ceremony in August after being elevated to third place when a Chinese gymnast was disqualified for being underage.

MEN’S FIGURE SKATING: Scott Hamilton, the 1984 gold medalist, had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor.
Hamilton’s publicist, Michael Sterling, said the 51-year-old skater was expected to make a full recovery.

NFL: The New York Giants picked up wide receiver and kick returner Chris Davis off waivers from Cincinnati.

Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe agreed on a multiyear deal with the St. Louis Rams three weeks after becoming an unrestricted free agent.

SOCCER

MLS: The New England Revolution placed forward Taylor Twellman on the injury list, ending his season. The team said Twellman had a setback in his rehabilitation from a concussion he sustained nearly two years ago.

BASKETBALL

WNBA:

Angel McCoughtry had 29 points with 10 rebounds and scored six straight in the final two minutes, leading the Atlanta Dream to a 96-90 victory over the visiting Tulsa Shock.
