Ghana beats the U.S. 2-1 in extra-time play.

 4:25 p.m. Update: Ghana scores a goal to make it 2-1 as extra-time play continues.

RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Landon Donovan scored from the penalty spot for the United States to tie its World Cup second-round match with Ghana at 1-1 after 75 minutes today.

Donovan sidefooted a shot into the net in the 62nd minute after Clint Dempsey was fouled in the penalty area by Jonathan Mensah.

Kevin-Prince Boateng had put Ghana ahead in the 5th minute with a low shot from the edge of the area after being allowed to race through unchallenged from the halfway line.

The winner will meet Uruguay in a quarterfinal at Johannesburg’s Soccer City on Friday.
