OLD TOWN — A funeral is set for a Maine soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The body of 25-year-old Sgt. Brandon Silk is due to be returned to Maine today. The funeral is set for Friday in Old Town.

Silk was a crew member on a Black Hawk helicopter. He was killed June 21 during what officials describe as a “hard landing.”

The Bangor Daily News says that weather permitting, a Black Hawk will conduct an honorary flyover during the graveside portion of the service for Silk Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town.

Silk graduated from Orono High School in 2003. He served with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.
