PORTLAND — A Cumberland County jury has returned a $7.3 million emotional distress verdict in favor of a businessman who contends he was double-crossed by a law firm he hired to represent his interests.

Peter Redman of Old Orchard Beach said Bernstein Shur of Portland worked against his interests in a dispute with his brother over control of Northern Mattress and Furniture Co., which has since gone out of business.

Redman was banned from the family business’ Fairfield headquarters over a sexual harassment claim that he contends was orchestrated by his brother to wrest control of the business. Redman’s lawyer, John Campbell, says Bernstein Shur failed to investigate and defend him against the accusations.

Bernstein Shur says Friday’s decision will be appealed.
