AUGUSTA  — The Maine medical examiner’s office says an autopsy is scheduled for an armed Marine Corps veteran who was shot by police on the property of a Veterans Affairs hospital in Augusta.

It’s unclear if the results of the autopsy on the body of 37-year-old James Popkowski of Medway will be released Friday.

The attorney general’s office says Popkowski of Medway was killed Thursday in a confrontation with a federal officer and two game wardens Thursday morning, near the entrance to VA Medical Center at Togus.

A family friend says a rare form of cancer cut short Popkowski’s military career. A hospital spokesman says Popkowski had received treatment but wouldn’t provide details.

Popkowski was killed after police received reports of gunfire near the VA.
