AUGUSTA — The Maine medical examiner’s office says an armed Marine Corps veteran who was killed in a confrontation with police died from a single gunshot wound to the neck.

An autopsy was performed Friday on the body of 37-year-old James Popkowski of Medway, who was killed Thursday in a confrontation with a federal officer and two game wardens near the entrance to VA Medical Center at Togus.

A family friend says a rare form of cancer cut short Popkowski’s military career. A hospital spokesman says Popkowski had received treatment but wouldn’t provide details.

Popkowski was killed after police received reports of gunfire near the VA.
