YORK — Maine State Police say a 27-year-old man from Canada died after the car he was riding in struck a moose on the Maine Turnpike around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night.

Police told WMTW-TV that Christopher Miller, of New Brunswick, was killed after the car, a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, he was in hit a moose in the center southbound lane on the turnpike in York.

Troopers said the car rolled several times after hitting the animal and came to rest against a tree.

Sgt. Paul Christianson said the driver sustained a serious head injury and was transported to a hospital. A female in the back seat of the car had some minor scrapes and bruises.

“It was raining, foggy, and the moose don’t show up in the dark,” Christianson said. “It’s almost impossible to see them at night. Their eyes don’t reflect in the dark like deer’s eyes do.”

Police said the three were driving from New Brunswick to Massachusetts to attend a concert.
