The fourth annual Urban Epic Triathlon drew more than 300 competitors Saturday for a race that started with a half-mile swim off East End Beach, then continued with a 13-mile bike ride through the heart of Portland and a 3.5-mile run that ended at the Maine State Pier.

With the swim portion of the event behind them, it was on to the bicycles for the competitors in the Urban Epic Triathlon. The bikers headed out from the transition station at Portland Yacht Services, a marina in the Old Port of Portland.

Kelsey Abbott of Freeport was the women's champion and finished 21st overall in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 48.9 seconds. Second was Elizabeth Hall of Merrimack, N.H., in 1:25.11.1, then Jennifer Corbett of Portsmouth, N.H.

Kurt Perham, 39, of Brunswick won the Urban Epic Triathlon for the second straight year and for the third time in four years. Perham finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 42.1 seconds, about three minutes ahead of Davis Backer of Cape Elizabeth.

Vaughn Cooper of Dover, N.H., was the first competitor out of the water after the half-mile swim. Cooper went on to finish fourth overall, 27 seconds behind Brett Hallstedt of North Yarmouth in third place.
