A Westbrook firefighter placed on unpaid leave after a woman obtained a protection from harassment order against him has resigned.

James Harbaugh, a part-time firefighter at the Westbrook Fire and Rescue Department, resigned from the department on Monday.

Fire Chief Michael Pardue declined to comment on the reasons for Harbaugh’s resignation.

“The department will move forward,” he said. “I respect that he has some personal obligations and commitments that cause him to need to step away from this department.”

Harbaugh joined the department in November of 1999. He was a member of the department’s call company and worked per diem.
