BANGOR — A man being held in Maine on charges he robbed a Bangor bank has been charged with a bank robbery in Rhode Island that is thought to be one of the robberies committed by a suspect the FBI nicknamed “the burly bandit.”

Forty-seven-year-old Robert Ferguson of Lowell, Mass., was arrested Wednesday and charged with robbing the Bangor Savings Bank the day before.

The FBI has offered a reward for information that could lead to an arrest in at least 10 bank robberies in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. The FBI named the suspect the burly bandit.

Police in Warwick, R.I., have issued an arrest warrant for Ferguson in a May 27 robbery.

Officials have not said publicly if they feel Ferguson is the burly bandit.
