Cronin gives up Scarborough baseball job after reaching playoffs four straight years

Jim Cronin resigned Wednesday as Scarborough High’s baseball coach after four seasons.

Cronin had an overall record of 39-28, and the Red Storm made the playoffs in each of his four seasons. In 2009, Scarborough had a 14-5 record and lost in the Western Class A final. The Red Storm were 12-5 last season, losing in the regional quarterfinals.

Cronin is the coach of Libby-Mitchell Post, Scarborough’s American Legion team. He teaches sixth-grade math and science in Scarborough and is an assistant coach for the Scarborough boys’ hockey team.


NECBL: Colin Snow allowed a run on three hits while walking one and striking out 10 in 62/3 innings to help the Sanford Mainers (17-13) to a 3-1 win over the New Bedford Bay Sox (12-18) at New Bedford, Mass.

Michael Roth drove in Joe Wendle with a groundout to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning.


SCARBOROUGH DOWNS: The Mid-Summer Classic pacing final will take place during the 12th race Saturday at Scarborough Downs.

The event is part of the track’s 60th anniversary celebration. Post time is 4 p.m.


U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Featherweight Liz Leddy of Portland will box Saturday in the women’s final against Jody-Ann Weller of Pomona, N.Y., after a medical walkover victory at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Leddy advanced when Alexandria Cardenas of San Antonio was denied medical clearance because of injuries from her previous fight.


MLS: Roger Levesque of Falmouth scored on a header after a cross from Fredy Montero in the 89th minute and the Seattle Sounders ended a four-game winless skid with a 1-0 win over D.C. United at Washington.
