A poll released late Monday shows Waterville Mayor Paul LePage, a Republican, leading the pack of five gubernatorial candidates, with support from 39 percent of those polled.

The Rasmussen Reports poll puts Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro, at 31 percent and independent Eliot Cutler at 15 percent. Three percent said they favored some other candidate and 12 percent said they are undecided.

The poll shows declines for both LePage and Mitchell, and an increase in support for Cutler. In June, LePage earned 43 percent support, Mitchell had 36 percent and Cutler 7 percent, according to Rasmussen.

It was not immediately clear whether the pollsters asked voters specifically about independents Shawn Moody and Kevin Scott, who will also be on the November ballot.

The poll surveyed 500 likely voters in Maine on July 14. It has a margin of error of 4.5 percent.
