BANGOR — City councilors in Bangor will vote soon on whether to seek a consultant’s services to review police and fire department operations following $800,000 in overtime costs in the last fiscal year.

Police Chief Ron Gastia said Monday most of the overtime in his department is tied up in court appearances by his officers and filling shifts left vacant by training, workers’ compensation, sick days and vacation.

The Bangor Daily News reported Gastia said he would keep an open mind about having a consultant review his department. On several occasions the chief offered councilors reminders of the complexities of police work.

Fire Chief Jeff Cammack did not attend the meeting.
