RAYMOND — Raymond Beach on Sebago Lake will be closed indefinitely on Friday for health reasons, according to a news release from Town Manager Don Willard.

Water quality tests at the beach have been satisfactory since a recent closure for elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, Willard said.

However, some beach users have left behind “increasing levels of hazardous debris” that constitutes a public health hazard, Willard said.

The debris includes human waste, even though the town maintains portable toilets at the beach, he said.

The beach on Route 302 will be closed starting at 5 a.m. Friday.

Willard said the beach will remain closed until the town develops a plan to better manage the public property or close it permanently.

Signs saying “No Trespassing – Beach Closed for Health Reasons” will be installed.

Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies will patrol the area and violators will be prosecuted by the town, Willard said.
