How many teenagers (and let’s face it, adults) have fantasized about being a rock star? An event for teens on Saturday at the Maine Mall in South Portland won’t make you a rock star, but will help you look like one.

The Shop Til You Rock event is a music and fashion tour of more than 100 General Growth Properties Malls in the U.S.

Stores at each mall team up with the tour to offer teens a chance to experience a live concert and get dolled up like a rock star.

At each stop on the tour, a live band will perform and various rock/fashion activities will be offered, all for free.

“Basically,” said Craig Gorris, the Maine Mall’s general manager, “it’s a music-inspired event — tour — that inspires teens to look and feel like rock stars.”

It can be argued that not too many parents relish the thought of their teen looking like a rock star, so Gorris stresses the Shop Til You Rock event is more about hanging out and having fun in a safe place.

On Saturday at the center court at the Maine Mall, local rock/pop band the Sophomore Beat will perform. Teens will get a chance to meet members of the band.

Teens can also hang out in the Pepsi Refresh Project Lounge or show off their dance moves during a dance off. Those who are really daring can get their hair styled a la their favorite performers at the Rock On Salon.

Maine Mall retail stores Macy’s, delia’s and Aeropostale will supply fashionable clothing and accessories so teens can show off their hip looks doing some freeze modeling.

Fans of pop/rock artist Demi Lovato, the Shop Til You Rock celebrity spokeswoman, have a chance to win four VIP tickets (which include backstage passes) to one of her concerts. You can sign up to win at www.shoptilyourock.com.
