• Military buffs, island lovers and anyone interested in Portland history have the opportunity on Aug. 8 to visit and learn about Fort Scammel, one of Portland’s oldest harbor defense forts.

Maine Maritime Museum will conduct a guided walking tour of the 19th-century fort and House Island, the now privately owned island where the fort was built. Local historians Joel Eastman, Ken Thompson and Harold Cushing will lead the tour and provide insights into the history of the fort while leading visitors through the structure’s passageways.

Cost is $30 for museum members, $35 for others. Reservations are required by Aug. 4 and may be made at www.mainemaritime museum.org or by calling 443-1316.
