• Beginning Friday, the Theater at Monmouth presents William Shakespeare’s “Pericles, Prince of Tyre,” an adventure of love, danger and mystery. • Gypsy Tailwind, a Portland-based Americana band, performs for free Thursday as part of the Alive at 5 concert series at Monument Square in Portland. The band will play songs from “Decades and Days,” its just-released third album, and is scheduled for a one-hour set, from 6:40 to 7:40 p.m. The Sea Captains open the show, beginning at 5 p.m.

Coming up

• Military buffs, island lovers and anyone interested in Portland history have the opportunity on Aug. 8 to visit and learn about Fort Scammel, one of Portland’s oldest harbor defense forts.

Maine Maritime Museum will conduct a guided walking tour of the 19th-century fort and House Island, the now privately owned island where the fort was built. Local historians Joel Eastman, Ken Thompson and Harold Cushing will lead the tour and provide insights into the history of the fort while leading visitors through the structure’s passageways.

Cost is $30 for museum members, $35 for others. Reservations are required by Aug. 4 and may be made at www.mainemaritime museum.org or by calling 443-1316.
