Police this morning arrested a couple on charges of filing a false report in connection with their claim that a mentally ill man grabbed their child last month in Old Orchard Beach.

Old Orchard Beach police obtained warrants for Clyde Huff III, 36, and Shelly Prescott, 31, whose last known address was in Saco. The pair was found at a campground in Dixfield and police there arrested them, police said.

Huff and Prescott told Old Orchard Beach police that Eric Auger, 37, tried to take their 3-year-old son from in front of the cabin they were staying at on June 22. Based on their report, police charged Auger with criminal restraint and he spent three weeks in jail.

However, another witness came forward and disputed the couple’s claim, leading the York County District Attorney to drop the charges against Auger.

The pair is charged with filing a false public report and unsworn falsification, and violating bail conditions, which are punishable by up to one year in jail.
