ROCKLAND, Maine — Police say the death of a 2-year-old boy in a hot car in Rockland was a tragic accident.

Police believe Paul Giamsiracusa Jr. crawled into the parked car, where he was found after his panicked parents realized he was missing and dialed 911 on Thursday.

State Police Sgt. Rick Fowler says both parents thought the boy was with the other inside their home. He says the boy was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center where he died Thursday night.

The Bangor Daily News quotes Jan Null from San Francisco State University, whose research indicates at least 471 infants and children have died in hot vehicles in the U.S. since 1998. According to Null’s research, 30 percent of those victims were playing unattended in a vehicle.
