ROCKWOOD — The pilot is dead and his passenger injured after their floatplane crashed this morning on Moosehead Lake in the town of Rockwood.

Authorities have identified the pilot as 64-year-old Telford Allen II. Allen is the founder of Telford Aviation Services, a regional and national leader in airplane parts sales and maintenance.

His passsenger, Natalie Holmes-Moody, 61, of Rockwood, was taken to Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she was listed in stable condition tonight.

“It went into the lake upside down,”  Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said.

The plane crashed at the mouth of the Moose River, off Route 6.

John Simko, Greenville’s town manager, is also the manager of the Greenville Municipal Airport. He responded to the crash in his capacity as an emergency medical technician.

He said Allen was a local force in aviation. He organized the region’s annual Fall fly-in of seaplanes and helped facilitate improvements at the Greenville airport.

“Telford was well known and liked. And his roots were in the Greenville area. You could meet him on the street and he would be as humble and genuine a person as you could meet,” Simko said.
