CAPE ELIZABETH – Ever since the inaugural race in 1998, TD Bank has been the prime sponsor of the Beach to Beacon. And in all that time, Larry Wold, the bank president, has run the race.

TD Bank’s support is vital not only for the race, but for Cape Elizabeth residents.

“If you look at the community of Cape Elizabeth, it sort of helps pull that community together around a special event,” Wold said. “It’s something to be very proud of. It’s not just a road race, it’s been voted as one of the best road races in America.”

Wold’s dedication to the race begins with his participation and contributions.

“There is excitement around it that is contagious,” he said. “It’s a chance to reconnect with people and race in your hometown.”

Wold said TD Bank and the Beach to Beacon have been a good pair from the start because of similar goals.

“Roll the clock back 13 years. (TD Bank was) trying to establish (an) identity,” said Wold, who has worked in the same bank and building for 20 years. “One of the things I love about this organization is that it hasn’t been afraid of raising its game.

“From a little tiny savings bank, it sets a good example that we are dedicated and committed people. This race can go toe-to-toe as one of the best races in the country. As a bank, we can compete at a world-class level. It exemplifies who we are.”

On Saturday, Wold will run his 13th Beach to Beacon and intends to continue his support.

“I haven’t missed one yet,” he said. “I really want to keep the streak going.”
