AMERICAN LEGION: Joseph Perez singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Branford, Conn., earned a 6-4 win over Gayton Post of Auburn in a winners’ bracket game at the Northeast Regional in Middletown, Conn.

Branford scored three in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. Scott Ouellette tied it in the eighth with an RBI double.

Mekae Hyde had three hits for Gayton.

BABE RUTH 13-15: Portland was eliminated from the regional tournament with a 12-3 loss against Leominster, Mass., at Quincy, Mass. Tom Dean and Kyle Riechert had RBI singles for Portland.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Nate Ellis scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Yates in the top of the 10th inning to give Lenders Network (14-9) a 9-8 victory over Aero Heating & Ventilating (13-11) at Deering Oaks, forcing a decisive Game 3 in their first-roud playoff series.

PORTLAND CC RECORD: Jerry DiPhilippo, an assistant pro at Portland Country Club in Falmouth, set a club record Wednesday with a 9-under-par 61.

HARNESS RACING

NASON WINS 2,000TH: Driver John Nason got his 2,000th win, steering Early Connection to a victory at Scarborough Downs.

LUGE

SWEENEY RETIRES: Portland native Megan Sweeney, 23, who finished 22nd at the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010, has retired from USA Luge.
