AUGUSTA  — The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has received a half million-dollar federal grant that will be used on several data-related projects.

Highway Safety Director Lauren Stewart said the money will fund improvements to Maine’s crash reporting system and an electronic program to monitor and tabulate motor vehicle violations and summonses. Another project will collect data from ambulance calls in Maine.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation is a continuation of grants awarded to Maine to update the reports that monitor and analyze motor vehicle crashes.

Several new features have been added to the crash reports filled out by Maine police officers, including more specifics on what caused the crash.
