AUBURN — A trial is under way for a Maine man who allegedly rammed two police cars with his dump truck and chased a third, before he was shot in the hip by an Auburn police officer and arrested.

Forty-nine-year-old Bartolo Ford of Lisbon is on trial in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn for aggravated attempted murder and five other felony charges in the September 2008 incident.

A chase began after Ford allegedly stole concrete cylinders from a business and was confronted by police. During a chase that sometimes reached 80 mph, two police cars were rammed, one of them head-on.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says Ford’s lawyer told the jury that Ford’s experience in the Gulf War and mental illness contributed to his actions.
