Warren Smith was named quarterback at the University of Maine today.

The decision was made after a long evaluation between Smith and former Portland High standout Chris Treister who was vying for the job.

The decision was a difficult one for UMaine’s coaches and came down to the wire. UMaine opens the season Thursday against Albany at home.

“It just came down to a slight edge,” said UMaine Coach Jack Cosgrove.

UMaine was among the best passing teams in the Colonial Athletic Association last year.

Smith threw for an average of 211.9 yards per game last year, completing 159 of 260 passes. He also threw 13 interceptions.
