The driver of a car that crashed Sunday morning killing two people in Casco had been celebrating moving into a new home, police said.

Nicholas Sparrow, 20, of Rosewood Street, was driving his mother’s 1993 Infiniti with the headlights off, when he went past Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Feeney at 1:14 a.m.

Sparrow eventually turned the headllights on, but Feeney said he was unable to catch up to the car, which was headed north on Route 11 at a speed exceeding 80 mph.

Killed when the car crashed into a tree were Thomas St. Saviour, 29, of Hiram and Michael Daye, 14, of Baldwin, a family friend of Sparrow’s.

Investigators say that Sparrow had seven friends at the party and several were under age.

Sparrow and his passengers had left the party to buy more alcohol at a nearby Big Apple store but were refused because it was after 1 a.m.

Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said nine people have been killed in the past 10 years in the area of Route 11 where Sparrow’s car crashed.

Deputies are working with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office to determine what criminal charges Sparrow should face. They believe both speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

Sparrow’s license was suspended for a previous drunk driving charge and he was out on bail following a burglary charge, Joyce said.
