PORTLAND — Thousands of tourists are expected in Portland this week as cruise ships make late-summer visits to the Maine.

Today, the Celebrity Summit is visiting Portland with 1,900 passengers before sailing on to Bar Harbor. The recently refurbished ship visited Portland for the first time earlier this summer.

On Friday, the Independence arrives in Portland with nearly 100 passengers before embarking on an eight-day cruise along the Maine coast.

The Explorer of Seas, with 3,114 passengers, carries the most passengers of any of the cruise ships berthing in Portland this year. Following its call in Portland on Saturday, the Explorer sails for Bar Harbor.

A record-setting 73 ships carrying 75,731 passengers are expected to visit the Port of Portland this season.
