SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland police collaborated with Westbrook police to pick up a local man who is facing a variety of drug charges in connection with passing bogus prescriptions.

Vincent M. Varanelli, 19, of South Portland, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, acquiring drugs by deception, forgery, and theft by receipt of stolen property.

Lt. Mike Nugent of the Westbrook Police Department said Varanelli’s arrest stems from a Westbrook investigation where a local doctor reported someone stole prescription pads from his office.

Varanelli allegedly passed bogus prescritions written on those stolen pads at several area pharmacies, including one for 180 tablets of Oxycodone. Varanelli is being held at the Cumberland County Jail where his bail has been set at $1,500 cash.
